New efficiency record for CIGS solar modules

AVANCIS, leading manufacturer of premium class CIGS solar modules, sets a new international standard with its CIGS thin film technology. With an externally certified power conversion efficiency of 19.64%, the German company establishes a new world record for an encapsulated CIGS thin-film module with integrated serial connection of size 30cm x 30cm (aperture area of 671 cm²). The top result was independently certified by the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL, USA). With this achievement AVANCIS excels the previous world record of 19.16% for CIGS modules of this size.

A new, energy-efficient commercial and office high-rise in a unique wood-hybrid construction was built on the site of the former goods station in the city of Tübingen. The new seven-storey commercial building ‘Westspitze’ is the flagship in the new city quarter of the old freight yard because the energy efficiency building is completely clad with PV modules on the façade. More than 600 bronze-colored solar façade modules from AVANCIS generate electricity with an annual forecast yield of more than 50 MWh. Thus, almost 30 tons of CO2 emissions are saved through the use of solar power per year.

More colors, sizes and heights: SKALA receives again general building approval

AVANCIS, the leading German manufacturer of premium photovoltaic modules, has expanded its SKALA architectural panel for energy-generating facades with decisive product features. In addition to more colors, lengths and higher flexibility for the type and direction of installation, SKALA is now approved for the façade use with wind loads for heights up to 100 meters. The multiple product design awards winner once again sets a new benchmark for electricity-generating façade cladding elements “Made in Germany”. In 2015, the frameless PV module with the hidden mounting system already initiated a completely new standard for solar façade modules as first glued laminated glass module of its kind receiving the German general building approval (abZ).

Thin-film photovoltaic CIGS technology has seen considerable growth of manufacturing capacity in recent years. The environmental impact, especially the CO2 footprint of CIGS thin-film panels shows great advantages compared to other solar technologies. CIGS panels show good performance in diffuse light conditions and at high temperatures, and are tolerant to partial shading. Additionally, the aesthetic qualities and the possibility of custom colors makes CIGS a superior PV technology for the application in building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), e.g. in solar façades.
